Tender Mercies

This week I want to start by sharing my love for all of you and my hope that you all are happy, healthy and well. If you aren't know that I pray for you all. I want to invite you all to think about how you have been in your relationship with god this week. Now I want to invite you to be a little bit better, I don't know your needs or what you have been doing only you and the savior know that. I do know that no matter where we are in our progression there is room for improvement. I have faith in you all and the power of the savior to help us in this life.

So now I want to share an experience from the mission that really was another of the many miracles that I have seen. To start we have been doing more street contacting and we have a bunch of new people to teach and to be honest keeping track of all the contacts is hard sometimes. So the other day we had a name and we had been praying and praying to remember who it was and where they lived and eventually the time came and went and we didn't remember. Needless to say we were a little disappointed but we were plenty busy. The next day after our lunch appointment we leave the apartment and see someone that needs help lifting things up the starts. We didn't recognize her until we were at the door IT WAS OUR CONTACT! The lord in his infinite mercy had provided us with a second chance.

My spiritual thought this week is that the lord will always give us a second chance even when we think that we don't deserve it. I know that the lord can and will work miracles in our lives if we live worthy of it and work hard to do all that we can. I want to invite you all to read the talk in the Liahona by Mindy Levitt and look for the pattern of assurance, faith and testimony. (see link to talk below)   I found that the lord will help us in many ways and a lot of times its not in the way that we have planned but I know its the way that we need.

Love,

The Power of the Prophets

So this week we had changes and I am really happy with my new companion! Hes so funny and one of the first things that he did was tell me that we weren't just companions we are friends and the holy ghost is our senior companion. I have learned a lot from him and the lord. In the first day that we were together we street contacted more than I had my whole training. He has 14 months in the mission but whenever people ask him how much time he has in the mission he says a little time. Hes really humble and his story about getting out on the mission is amazing. Ohh shoot his name is Elder Jimenez hes from Tijuana!

The second day we were together it started to rain like it usually does here and we went to cross the street but I didn't see a pot hole and this car passed by and I was so wet! Almost 1 minute later a different car stops to talk to us and says were inactive right now but we want to reactivate and talk about the baptisms for our two kids! It was such a huge miracle right after the funny part of the day luckily the lord has a sense of humor. Also we have been asking for a bunch of references and its really paid of in ways that cant be expressed. I have made it my goal to help the barrio or the people in some way specific. I saw the look on my companions face when he said he felt like he hasn't changed anything in the area.

So we have finally got the conference edition of the Liahona! I have been study the talks and one has really hit me. Its the talk by Elder Clayton and I have seen an interesting interaction between belief, testimony. and faith that's been incredible. If we want to increase these things we need to act immediately. First we have to believe or desire to believe and receive an assurance and we must act and have faith. Then with that faith we must act on it and put our belief and faith in practice. With that faith we increase our testimony and really grow. After that we must share it and that's how we grow our faith its all an interrelated triangle.

I want to share with you all my testimony that I know that our savior lives and that the moments we feel we don't have hope are the moments we need to choose to believe. In those moments most difficult we can choose to give up on ourselves, on the lord, on the church or we choose to have faith and hope and work for a better day. Nothing good ever comes by us doing nothing it comes by us doing all that we can and having patience and hope in a future day.

Cambios!!!! (Transfers!!!)

June 8th

So this week is the first real change in the mission and I will be having a new companion. His name is Elder Hemenez and that is all that I know about him. I'm hoping that he will be able to help me learn a lot like my old companion. Ohh I know that he has 18 months in the mission as well so he has a lot of experience.

Cool story about this week with an investigator! We have had this investigator Juan and he is a welder and works in construction so you could say that I know a little about that so we had the chance to serve him. So hes building his house and we offered to helped and the miracle is that he said that we could help him! So these are the pictures of our service and you could say that it was so fun and so dirty. I mean the job is throwing concrete and then flattening it out a bit. It was a lot of fun I hope my family is proud!

So this week I have continued to study faith and tried to apply it to myself and what I need to change in my life. I have learned that faith is so many things and that if people say they have faith without acting they have the words that they said and that's about it. I recognize that its a miracle when people grow there testimony its a miracle when an investigator receives a revelation and a desire to be baptized. People here look for big miracles but I know that miracles are in our lives every day.

I want to share with you all two scripture I love in the book of mormon from Isaiah in 2 Nephi 7: 2,4 I dont know why I love these scriptures so much they just spoke to me in a way really special. I verse to I felt like it was saying that the lord can demonstate his miracles if he wants to and sometimes we need to be the fish and feel a little uncomfortable and he will bring the water back to fulfill his natural purposes. Then we have verse 4 when we are tired and feel that we have nothing he will wake us up and he will help us hear and learn what we need to learn. He will never abandon us. I love you and and I pray for you all. Please pray for me and my investigators.

We must be like a river......calm and purposeful

So this week was interesting and I learned a lot about faith. We often say that we have faith but what would happen if someone asked you what you do with your faith. We have been trying to help our investigators understand this principle and act on their faith and we have seen a lot of changes and improvements. We have one investigator that when he gets a pamphlet he reads it and studies it like homework its pretty sweet!

I want to explain the title this week and why I love it so much. I was reading in the Book of Mormon this week like I do every week and found a passage that I love so much. It's in 1 Nephi 20:18 I don't know why it hit me so hard. It made me think, Am I calm as a river? I also can't help but think that like a river we must have a purpose and a direction to where we are going. The river is calm on the surface but underneath it is pushing hard toward its goal and not letting anything stop it. Also I like how we need to be powerfully righteous. The waves are so powerful and help so much! Then in the next verse about our posterity..... I was so amazed to think that we only have sand because it gets refined and polished into this minut sand.

Cool story! This week I was in charge and we had this day that all of our appointments fell through. I didn't know what to do so I said a prayer in my heart and a name came to my mind and we went there. It was so cool because we went to find one person and found an investigator we had been looking for for about a month.

Sorry that this message is a little short. Know that I love you all and pray for you all everyday.

Peace as a River

I always appreciate Elder Packham sharing his thoughts with us.  I did some study on 1 Nephi 20:18 as well.  When I read it, I took a moment to let the mental image of peace being like a river settle in.

The verse in question is 1 Nephi 20:18. It reads as follows:

O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments — then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea.

The Lord is saying, ‘I am the one who is teaching you how to live and behave. If you had listened to and followed my commandments (harkened) then your peace would be like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.’

So what does it mean to be like ariver? Picture a river in your mind. What is the setting? Rivers are guarded on both sides by banks of earth. This means they are protected and channeled. Sometimes rivers are shallow and are lined on the bottom with large rocks, so you have rapids and they can be dangerous. That is not the normal condition of a river. Most of a river’s course lies in deeper channels, so the water, though traveling swiftly, appears calm and smooth from above.

When we obey God’s commandments we are guided by those commandments like the banks of earth that channel the river. Our lives, though rocky at times, even out and flow more smoothly and quietly than open water, like in the ocean. When storms come the river may swell, but it is still normally kept within its banks, and quickly subsides to its normal flow. The Lord is asking Israel, ‘Which would you rather have, the tempestuous and uncontrolled rolling about of the open seas or the quiet calm of the river my commandments supply?’

In that same verse he uses another water symbol, the waves of the sea to make a point. He tells Israel that if they keep his commandments their righteousness will be like the waves of the sea. The aspect he is referencing here is the constancy of the water’s movement. It is true that waves are bigger at some times and smaller at others, but they never stop. There is always movement in the water. Those who obey God’s commandments will become like the ocean wave, constant and consistent in their performance of good.

The use of natural processes is a powerful tool in the Lord’s teaching arsenal. But in order for us to be able to connect with that arsenal of tools, we need to have had some kind of contact and exposure to the natural world around us. If we have never planted seeds and tended the plants until they were fully grown, we would not have any real idea what was being taught by the parable of the sewer. If we have never seen anyone broadcast seeds, which means to take a handful of seeds and scatter them with a horizontal swing of the arm, we won’t know where many images come from in the scriptures. The Lord expects us to stay connected with the natural world around us so we can grasp the imagery and make the connections he uses to instruct us.

I think that imagery and parables are great ways to learn gospel principles.  Scripture study can really teach us and guide our lives but we need to be open to the spirit....we need to take those moments to reflect on what we are reading. For me, having peace in my life is so important - I want to be calm like a river.......in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
