Hola mi amigos!! and an AWESOME family history story!!!!

So this week has been great everyone! We have 3 new investigators and we taught 19 lessions this week and that was crazy! I hope that our numbers keep increasing more and more. Here in the mexico city north we aren't allowed to tract solely referrals and that makes things a little hard. However we keep finding success and 11 of them are menos activos or recen conversos. The people here are so amazing I cant even express it they will not let you leave without either feeding you or giving you food of some kind! Everyone loves the pictures that i brought from home with my family and the Liz Lemon Swindle pictures.

As an idea my companion and I made copies of the pictures and are giving them out as a thank you for referrals we hope that will get people excited. Our investigators our progressing but haven't accepted a date for baptism just yet. A really cool thing one of our investigators had been reading scripture verses as prayers but we got him to pray on his own and have a conversation with the lord it was so special.

The training is going well a lot of it is review of what they taught in the CCM but that's okay because its all for my benefit. My trainer makes me laugh so much and we have a great time. In the leccions its not uncommon for us to spend an hour with a family they love to talk here its so different.

Ohh crazy story this week we were walking to try and catch an investigator to teach and an alcoholic guy invited us back to his place to give him a leccion. I was so against it but my trainer lead the way and 2 hours later we left having taught kind of a leccion and being fed it was unique haha. The ward mission leader here is a recent convert and he gave the other elders 20 references of people to teach it was crazy!

Last night we helped with a family home evening and found out that two of the young adults in the family aren't members and they were really interested in family history work! Ohh this Sunday I gave my first talk here in mexico city north turns out the church is same everywhere when you have a new elder he gives a talk. I way over prepared I think I ended up giving a 10 minute talk in what I hope was understandable Spanish at least that's what people said! haha

I shared with them D&C 6:34 and 36 as well as Alma 5:38! I love these scriptures! They have such power and strength. Jesus Christ is our savior and our redeemer and through him and his gospel we receive the strength to do something more. I would encourage you all to share and do something more every day.

Ohh milestone of the week! I have officially started using only me Spanish scripture for the leccions. I still study in my English but in the leccions its only Spanish scriptures. Here in mexico there is a big emphasis on familia historia and its been really cool to share my family tree with people and talk about my ancestors the pioneers and the faith that they had!

I am really sorry everyone that I haven't been able to write back its been crazy and I'll figure out how to get the pictures working and stuff.

Elder Packham was very excited about the interest in family history work so I sent him this story:
Stillman Pond (great, great, great, great grandfather- through your great grandmother’s side)
In the early days of the Church Stillman Pond was a member of the second quorum of the seventy in Nauvoo. He was an early convert to the Church, having come from Hubbardston, Massachusetts. Like others, he and his wife, Maria, and their children were harassed and driven out of Nauvoo. In September 1846 they became part of the great western migration. The early winter that year brought extreme hardships, including malaria, cholera, and consumption. The family was visited by all three of these diseases. Maria contracted consumption, and all of the children were stricken with malaria. Three of the children died while moving through the early snows. Stillman buried them on the plains. Maria’s condition worsened because of the grief, pain, and the fever of malaria. She could no longer walk. Weakened and sickly, she gave birth to twins. They were named Joseph and Hyrum, and both died within a few days. The Stillman Pond family arrived at Winter Quarters, and like many other families, they suffered bitterly while living in a tent. The death of five children coming across the plains to Winter Quarters was but a beginning. The journal of Horace K. and Helen Mar Whitney verifies the following regarding four more of the children of Stillman Pond who perished: “On Wednesday, the 2nd of December 1846, Laura Jane Pond, age 14 years, … died of chills and fever.” Two days later on “Friday, the 4th of December 1846, Harriet M. Pond, age 11 years, … died with chills.” Three days later, “Monday, the 7th of December, 1846, Abigail A. Pond, age 18 years, … died with chills.” Just five weeks later, “Friday, the 15th of January, 1847, Lyman Pond, age 6 years, … died with chills and fever.” 15 Four months later, on May 17, 1847, his wife, Maria Davis Pond, also died. Crossing the plains, Stillman Pond lost nine children and a wife. He became an outstanding colonizer in Utah and later became a leader in the quorums of the seventy. Having lost these nine children and his wife in crossing the plains, Stillman Pond did not lose his faith. He did not quit. He went forward. He paid a price, as have many others before and since, to become acquainted with God. The Divine Shepherd has a message of hope, strength, and deliverance for all. If there were no night, we would not appreciate the day, nor could we see the stars and the vastness of the heavens. We must partake of the bitter with the sweet. There is a divine purpose in the adversities we encounter every day. They prepare, they purge, they purify, and thus they bless. When we pluck the roses, we find we often cannot avoid the thorns which spring from the same stem. Out of the refiner’s fire can come a glorious deliverance. It can be a noble and lasting rebirth. The price to become acquainted with God will have been paid. There can come a sacred peace. There will be a reawakening of dormant, inner resources. A comfortable cloak of righteousness will be drawn around us to protect us and to keep us warm spiritually. Self-pity will vanish as our blessings are counted. The blessings of
eternity will surely come to those who endure refining, as the Lord Himself taught: “He only is saved who endureth unto the end.” 16 I testify that Jesus is the Christ and the Divine Redeemer. He lives! His are the sweet words of eternal life.

STILLMAN POND A Biographical Sketch Compiled By Leon Y. and H. Ray Pond Stillman Pond, an early Utah Pioneer, was born on the 26th of October, 1803, at Hubbardston, Worcester, Massachusetts. He was the son of Preston Pond and Hannah Rice. His paternal grandfather was a revolutionary soldier and served in several campaigns. His great-grandfather, Ezra Pond, of Franklin, being dissatisfied with religious conditions of that time, was a dissenter and a leader of the minority in the Franklin Church troubles between 1680 and 1685. He was a restless soul. At that time the religious, social and civic affairs of the community were the same, and when Ezra Pond refused to comply with the orders of the Selectmen, he was forced to leave town. He moved with his family to Hubbardston. Stillman seemed to have inherited this restlessness and dissatisfaction which manifested itself in his frequent moves as a young man. On his Maternal side, his Grandfather was David Rice, who was a grandson of Lt. Paul Moore, one of the Commanders of the American Army in the battle of Bunkerhill. All of his ancestors were sincere, honest, and God-fearing pioneers and puritans, many of whom were ministers, others were Selectmen of the early towns of New England. Stillman followed in their foot steps as a tiller of the soil. Perhaps few of his ancestors and progenitors ever won national fame and fortune, and fewer still, ever brought reproach or shame upon their name. His ancestors were hard working, honest people, who have left us a heritage which we may be proud. Stillman Pond lived with his parents until he was twenty years of age, during which time he received a common school education corresponding to the first ten grades of our present day educational system. (1965) He worked on his Father's farm and being the oldest, most of the responsibility fell on him. At that time he learned the trade of harness making by which he used, to make a living. On the 22nd of December, 1825, he married Almyra Whittemore, after which his father gave him a tract of land, where he made his home. He lived there but a few years, when the spirit of moving took possession and he sold his property and removed to Westminster, where he purchased several tracts of land. He remained there until 1832, when he moved to Templeton. His wife bore him five children, four girls and a boy. Almyra Pond died on the 25th of July 1833 and was buried at Hubbardston, Mass. On July 4, 1834, he married Maria Louisa Davis at Hubbardston. He settled again in this community until 1837 when he moved his family to New Salem, Franklin County, Mass. Where during the next five years he purchased three large tracts of land. The first purchase date was the 27th of September, 1838. He seemed to have been a speculator in land, as he always bought and sold at a profit.

I echo that statement....

March 23rd

This week Elder Packham's brother, Elder Jorvik Harris, wrote home from his mission and mentioned that missions are hard.  Elder Packham said... "I echo that statement!"  They also shared similiar opinions about patience!  I am thankful for the things that they are learning about themselves.

Here is Elder Packham's email:

So I'm going to write this in English because I want to share a lot and I don't understand the people that could write in Spanish already at this point in there mission. So I can understand a lot of what is being said which is really good but I am having trouble feeling like I am gaining confidence in talking in Spanish. If you guys would mind praying for the gift of tongues for me I would really appreciate it and probably the people that have to hear my horrible Spanish too.

My trainer has 3 months in the mission and he is from 2 hours away from our mission and is 24 but the spirit is so strong in him. I have pictures but the computer is being weird here so sorry I don't think that I will be sending any pictures. Sorry in advance for my spelling I am already like a paragraph ahead of the speed of the computer.

The people here are so different! They're so generous and kind its unbelievable I really like it. I wish more people in the states were like this. They have nothing but they wont let you leave their house without giving you something for the road. We have 1 investigator that is progressing he's 9 and its really hard for me cause he doesn't understand my Spanish at all. We had an investigating couple come to church which was cool cause I invited them to baptism I just forgot to get a date but I still count it.!
The hardest part for me right now is getting used to the culture. People here love to talk so that means that we easily have an hour lesson or more. I have to realize that its a productive us of time here and not a waste.

I love the spirit of the people here I wish I could adequately express all the feelings that I have about this. I mean here you could just call someone last minute and they just want to do what ever it is. For me I would think it was an imposition but that's not how it works here. Everyone loves all of the pictures I brought and stuff.

The coolest thing this week was my second day we had two lessons with less actives and we found two new people to teach cause they wanted to practice their English with me. Can you say moved by the spirit that was cool!

The names of our investigators are Sebastian, Juan and Ellana, Surian, and Antelma.

I am praying that Elder Packham will find his confidence with the language.  There is a great talk by Elder Holland entitled, "Cast Not Away Thy Confidence" and here is a quote from it:   "Along with the illuminating revelation that points us toward a righteous purpose or duty, God will also provide the means and power to achieve that purpose.  Trust in that eternal truth. If God has told you something is right, if something is indeed true for you, he will provide the way for you to accomplish it.  That is true of joining the Church.  It is true of getting an education, of going on a mission or of getting married or of any of a hundred worthy tasks in your young lives."
I know that God will provide a way for Michael to accomplish his purposes in Mexico!

The time in the CCM has flown by...

March 12th

Well folks the time in the CCM has flown by I feel like I just got here. I have changed so much in just 6 weeks and that's in this nice little sheltered environment I cant wait to see what happens when I actually get out there. I met all latinos that are going to my mission this last week. They don't understand me but I hear from other latinos that work here that I speak really good Spanish so I'm confused but ohh well. I brought my journal today for the express purpose of sharing EVERYTHING about this week but we will see if that will actually happen.

I learned a lot this week from the missionaries in my zone actually. They all have such incredible and different stories about why they were out here and what has shaped there testimonies. One elder shared how his dad taught him about the repentance process by pleading with him through tears after his fought with his brother to seek forgiveness from the lord. Another elder has seen the power of missionary work in his own life through his mother a convert, she had to risk losing her whole family for what she knew was true. I love my district they might be a little rambunctious sometimes but when they share the spirit its amazing.

My companion has been sick most of this week with strep so I had to go on a couple splits to cover our teaching appointments. You learn a lot about how the spirit prepares you when you have to just be lead by it. There's one elder who really struggles with the language like me but when he opens his scriptures he finds such a strong verse.

So just yesterday my companion was feeling better and so he came back to class but another companionship was down with the bug. This other companionship was supposed to teach so we had to give lesson with 5 minutes notice and the teachers boss's boss was sitting in, it was a little nerve racking goodness haha. So my companion and I had taught together in like a week so it was a little rough but we were still able to share the essentials to the investigator.

Then later on that day we had TRC which is where volunteers from all these different backgrounds come in and help us practice our awful Spanish. Both our people were converts and they had amazing stories! We were supposed to talk about revelation through church attendance but the one hermana has been a member for 3 years and already works in a stake calling and is at church every day for at least like 2 hours, shes retired and just gives it all to the church. It was really special we shared with her our testimonies about how we both found the importance of church and then 3 nephi 18:12-13 about building on a sure foundation of the church. My goodness could you feel the spirit and then my companion shares Helaman 5:12 and I was like rocking in my seat as we talk about how bad the world my be if we find the lord we will be able to do all things.

We also got to hear a live broadcast from Elder Quinton L Cook at the Provo mtc. One of the biggest things that I drew from that lesson is that if we have more faith then we will have more success in what ever we do that is in harmony with the lords plan. I would encourage all you members to really dig into section 11 of the doctrine and covenants. I just started reading it through chronologically and the treasures there are priceless.

I have a firm testimony in missionary work I know that it makes a huge difference in peoples lives no matter what capacity we are called to. The truthfulness of this gospel can not be denied you will receive that confirmation. Please if you need strengthened meet with the missionaries in your area they would love to help you from the most genuine place in there heart.

With all my love,
Elder Packham

"Hear to listen, Listen to learn, Learn to act"

Well this is a crazy letter to write for me. This week has been full of a lot a changes here in the CCM (Missionary Training Center). I forget to write and tell everyone that David Archuletta was here last week with the girl from the dominican republic from the Meet the mormons movie. I have been studying my heart out in the scriptures and have learned a lot. Sometimes I worry that I spend to much time in the scriptures but then I remember that the lord will help with my weaknesses.

This week at TRC (a class where we teach volunteers) The emphasis was on receiving revelation through the book of Mormon. We taught this guy who hasn't been to church in six years and I realized something incredible. I have a huge testimony about the power of this book and what blessing it can offer us in our lives. I read in Jacob 4:6, 9, 10. I will share with you all a part of this testimony. We hold in our hands the same words of the lord (through the prophets) that commanded the world to be created and performed many a miracle to demonstrate his love for us. We hold these amazing words literally at our finger tips but how often do we really take advantage of them and dig into them and let our hungry souls be feed by it. I beg all of you to take "counsel from his hands" see the incredible lessons that can be learned from these words. If you haven't read the book of Mormon please do because I know that the book of Mormon is true and I have read it once. It is all you need to do to feel his love.

Our investigators are progressing despite our inadequacies with the language. We do a lot of reading out of the book of Mormon it simply explains the many blessings of the gospel it is the perfect teacher. This week I have worried that I don't share enough testimony and rely to heavily on the words of the lord but as I felt the spirit as I bore my testimony about the book I received a full answer to that question. It also helped to hear words from Elder Bednar about how we need to stop worrying so much about if you are feeling the spirit and just do the greatest good whatever it may be.

This Sunday was sad for us because we said goodbye to the oldest and favorite district in our zone. They left us a lot of wisdom and just showed us great examples. Upon their leaving my companion and I got called as the new district leaders for our district. I don't know how I feel about this responsibility. I just love my district more and more each day and encourage them to think about which decision is "good, better, and best."

Lastly I will share a little bit about our devotional this week. We all need to "hear to listen, Listen to learn, Learn to act" Are we actively listening to those around us not just hearing them as background noise to our own personal stories. As I learn a new language it is so hard to not trying and think of a response as the person in front of me is talking. I know every time I stop to really hear what they are saying I'm giving myself the chance to really help them.

I love you all,
Elder Packham

Line upon line...

In the Book of Mormon, in 2 Nephi 28:30, it reads:"For behold, thus saith the Lord God: I will give unto the children of men line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little; and blessed are those who hearken unto my precepts, and lend an ear unto my counsel, for they shall learn wisdom; for unto him that receiveth I will give more; and from them that shall say,We have enough, from them shall be taken away even that which they have."

In Elder Packham's email this week, he spoke about growing line upon line.  It made me think of the scripture above. It also made me think about how the fundamental doctrines and principles of the gospel were not revealed to Joseph Smith in the Sacred Grove in a neatly organized binder. Rather they were revealed as circumstances warranted and as the timing was right.

I am confident that Elder Packham's growth will happen just like that on his mission - line upon line - as circumstances warrant and the timing is right. Oh happy day!

Here is his email:
February 26th

Alright well another Pday and another day down in the CCM. Things here are really good just different. Its weird having like every minute of your day planned out but kind of nice at the same time. I have been learning a lot about the gospel this week and seeing the blessings that pour out from being exactly obedient. To be honest, the language is kind of starting to get me down a bit.  I mean its not easy and its really hard. I learned alot about humility this week as well. Up until this time Ive planned all the lessons and everything but, for the first time, it was different. We had an impromptu lesson with some hermanas and my companion took lead and it made me realize that I need to step back so he can have the opportunity to learn how to teach. I really love my district a lot.  They all have such a great spirit.

There's an Elder Vanzanten here from Logan UT! His dad is very anti now and he had to tell him that he had found the lord and was heading out on a mission. The courage of that guy. He said that I would be one of the few people that could hold a discussion with him in the scriptures. Thank you institute!

Ohh so last week my companion was sick, this week half the district was sick. I'm not exaggerating 4 of the 8 elders were bed ridden and one guy in our zone had to get an IV cause he had lost so many fluids. I have avoided all that though! Score one for the home team!

The dear elder letters have been amazing! Make sure you send your addresses cause I want to try and respond to everyone that wrote me.

My scripture for today would have to be DC 122. 3_8 Sorry but the signs are weird on this computer. It really helps when you might be feeling discouraged or overwhelmed. I really love the spirit that is here in the CCM and on a mission I know that I will have to grow line upon line though which makes it hard for me cause patience isnt my best virtue haha. I just want to be the kind of messenger that it talks about in I think Alma 29 that can speak with the voice of the people (Spanish).

I love you all thank you!

Week Two - with pictures!

Hey everyone so this is the second week in the mtc and its been incredible! So today for preparation day guess what we got to do? Visas!!! So I didn't get back until like right now so needless to say that it was a long day. But since we were waiting so long for passport so we can get our visas a few of us went out street contacting. With our horrible Spanish we contacted into three different people it was really amazing.
Ohh so that talk I was dreading guess who got called this week? That's right it was this guy! Ironically it was on repentance so you could say that I knew a little about what it takes. Ohh and then we got to hear an amazing talk about how we need to turn our attentions out ward like the savior. It was really amazing.
Monday to now was kind of a blur just a lot of activity trying to learn a language and a lesson. Ohh started lessons with a new investigator and its been incredible you can really feel the spirit when we teach her. Shes had a pretty hard life so I cant wait to share the incredible gift that is the gospel fully with her. After our lesson with her yesterday we had to go to the infermeria cause my companion was sick. I spent ten hours in the room studying and listening to my church music while he sleep. So I am sending a few pictures this week.
One is of the outside of the mtc we live in like a walled off city block with barbwire at the top of the walls. Then we have one of the view of the comida when we eat outside the palm trees are very different from back home. Ohh and one of them is of my district they are all great guys really just here for some different reasons. Ohh and that one is of my companion he is from Gilbert Arizona and he is a little older here.
I still get a lot of comments about my age here at the ccm. I mean I don't think they mean it in a bad way its just something that people say. I also get told I'm like a dad in my district and I always freak em out with the stuff that I know in the scriptures. I think I'm more impressed than they are haha.
Ohh we saw a video about john tanner and everything he gave to the church because of his faith and how he was all about the law of consecration. It really motivated me to read up on what it takes to be a consecrated missionary. I know that if you leave it all at the alter of sacrifice that the lord will reward your service maybe not in any time frame that we can understand but in his time.
In Luke 18 it talks about what it really means to leave it all behind to serve the lord. Its the saviors response to peter after he talks about the difference between him and the rich man it was really touching as well.
I love you guys and to everyone that wrote me using missionarymx or dear elder a special big thanks! I have way more emails this week thanks guys :) I guess I will just leave a short testimony that the lord knows each of us personally and loves us despite our faults and mistakes. He wants to be with us again and I know that he has provided a way for us to do that. I know that the Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ and allows us learn more about his character. I love you all!

Week one in the CCM: I'm the crazy one

Okay I'm in the mtc... in a district of all guys and Im the crazy obedient one! I think that they tolerate me haha. I really love the mtc even if Im the crazy one. I mean I am busy 24/7 and its amazing. I feel the spirit so often when Im here. I know that on a mission thats not always the case so Im trying to take advantage of it. Ohh so I go to an only Spanish sacrament and every sunday you have to prepare a talk in Spanish just in case you get called on! haha I mean I feel the spirit but when you your waiting for them to announce who's talking next your gut tightens a bit, especially cause Im not the best at Spanish.

We started teaching our first investigator the second day that we were here only in Spanish. I mean I led the lesson with talking but it really wasnt me. The gift of tounges is real! So when they say that your time in the mtc is like trying to drink from a fire hose, they are totally right! haha The food here is not the same as what they get in the provo mtc but Im not pickey and its still pretty great. ohh so we committed our investigator to baptism the other day I mean it wasnt the first lesson but it was after we explained the restoration so I think that it still counts!me? We got to got the temple today but it was just the vistor center cause they were working on the temple.

Did you know that mexico city is sinking? I sure didnt haha

Ohh I wish I would have brought my usb cord with me! This place is so beautiful I mean they have palm trees every where and the grass is manicured and its really just awesome. They call it the land bountiful because we are in this walled off city (almost) but thats okay we still have a ton of fun. I mean sometimes mis companermismos - my district gets a little crazy but they are all great guys and I love em.

My first companion is an Elder Blake Knighton from Arizona and he will be headed to the same mission that I am going to. As far as I know it will just be him and I heading to mexico at that time. That will be different. I always thought that missionaries came in groups to an area but thats okay. Its wierd thinking that I have not even 5 more weeks here :O Then I get to go out and try and teach in Spanish. Everything here at the mtc is so cheap I mean the church gives us a hundred pesos a week here and I am not even close to spending it all- thanks to all the stuff that I already brought with me.

I guess I will bear my testimony I dont what else to say. I only had 3 emails this week so ya'll should write me. Or you can send a letter through a site called dear elder.com I believe they actually deliver it in the mail and its really cool.

I know that this gospel is true and that I have been called out here for a reason. I know that god is our loving heavenly father and that he wants to be happy thats why he provided a way for us to return to him again. I know that the atonement is real because I have seen it work in my own life and in the life of everyone in my district. Please, I invite you all to read the book of mormon if you arent already. So many answers and comfort are in this book waiting for you. I know that joseph smith was a prophet of god and that he translated the book of mormon through the power of god. en el nombre de jesucristo amen.

Sincerely,
Elder Packham

Faith in Every Footstep

Elder Michael Packham left to the Mexico City MTC (or as I later discovered..CCM) on February 4th, 2015. It was really emotional for me.  Jacob had just returned from his mission, four days previous, and Elder Jorvik Harris had left to serve his mission a week prior.  To say that those days were an emotional roller-coaster would be an understatement.

Here are some pictures from the airport:

                                              He was so excited!!!!

I'm really grateful that they had 4 days together!

Siblings...she gained one brother back and lost two!

This was right before he went up the escalator.... I call it his big sigh look - haha!

See you in two!!!!

With Steadfast Faith in Christ

And it is exactly that FAITH that has led us here.

Michael received a call to serve as a representative of the Lord, Jesus Christ, in Mexico, Mexico City North for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Have you ever heard the analogy about the mustard seed and faith?  In Matthew 17:20 and Luke 27:6, it says, "If you have faith as a grain of a mustard seed, nothing shall be impossible unto you." What you don't usually hear is that as that seed grows, it is literally torn apart in the process.  And so it is with the FAITH that led us here.... it tore us apart and then we grew.  It is and was miraculous.  Now, I say we - because I truly feel as though I was on that journey with Michael.

I am proud of Michael. All people when faced with their demons, have a choice.  Having a choice is something that all of us will always have - free will.  It is a gift from our Father.  The ability to choose in any given situation.

Without getting into all the details, I can tell you that Michael's first mission call came in just over 2 years ago.  Obviously he did not go 2 years ago....but as I told Michael, those 2 years turned him into a spiritual giant!!!  Most missionaries learn about the atonement on their missions by watching it applied in others lives... well, Michael learned it by going through his own journey.  His testimony is incredible!!!

So Michael entered the Mexico CCM (MTC) on February 4th.  I believe, without a doubt, that there is a great purpose in Mexico for Michael.  Think about it... the Lord is still sending him there.  There is clearly something to be done that can only be done by Michael.  I am excited for him and his journey.

Michael has one brother who just returned from a two-year mission on January 31st and another that left on his mission on January 28th.  The conversations that I have had with my RM(returned missionary) is that the greatest conversion on your mission will be your own.  That is not to say that they are serving without a testimony, they are clearly not.  It is to say that thier mission is between them and the Lord.  He will use them during this time to shape their lives and others.  It will be a joy to witness.

I will be posting about Michael's mission off and on.  Feel free to follow along!

For Michael:
Press forward, Elder Packham, with steadfast faith in Christ,
With hope's bright flame alight in heart and mind,
With love of God and love of all mankind.
